How to Take Off Flat Back Earrings (and Put Them Back In)

Part of our complete guide to flat-back earrings →

You've had the same pair in for weeks. Now you want to switch — and the earring won't twist, won't pull, and there's no butterfly back to grab. You're standing at the mirror wondering if you need pliers.

You don't. Taking off a flat back earring takes a few seconds once you know which kind you're holding. Here's how, plus how to put a pair back in.

First, the Parts

A flat back earring has three pieces:

  • The decorative top — the part you see from the front. It carries a thin pin.
  • The post — a hollow tube that runs through your piercing.
  • The flat disc — the smooth round back that rests against the back of your ear. It's part of the post.

To take the earring off, you separate the top from the post. How you do that depends on whether the top is threadless (push-pin) or threaded (screw-in).

Threadless or Threaded? The Ten-Second Check

Hold the flat disc behind your ear with one hand. With the other, gently turn the top counterclockwise — lefty-loosey.

  • If it turns, it's threaded. Keep turning.
  • If it doesn't turn at all, it's threadless. Don't force the twist — it comes out a different way.

Every TISTELLA pair is threadless. Jewelry put in at a piercing studio is often threaded. If you're not sure where yours came from, the check above tells you.

How to Take Off Threadless Flat Back Earrings

  1. Wash and dry your hands. Dry fingers grip far better than damp ones.
  2. Hold the disc. Pinch the flat disc firmly behind your ear between your thumb and finger. Hold the disc itself, not your earlobe.
  3. Hold the top. Grip the decorative top at its base, close to your ear — not by a chain or a hanging stone.
  4. Pull straight forward. Use slow, steady pressure, straight out from the ear. The pin slides out of the post.
  5. Slide the post out from the back. Once the top is off, the post and disc come out from behind.

The pin is held by friction from a slight bend near its tip, so the first pull feels firmer than you expect. That's normal. Keep the pull straight rather than at an angle, and it releases.

How to Take Off Threaded Flat Back Earrings

  1. Hold the flat disc firmly behind your ear.
  2. Turn the top counterclockwise until it comes free.
  3. Slide the post out from the back.

If it won't start turning, it may have been tightened hard at the studio. A better grip on both ends usually does it — see below.

When a Flat Back Earring Feels Stuck

  • Get more grip. A clean tissue, a dry cloth, or a rubber glove over your fingertips makes a big difference on a small, smooth top.
  • Hold the disc, not the lobe. If you pinch your earlobe instead of the disc, the whole earring moves with your skin and nothing separates.
  • Use two hands and a mirror. One hand behind, one in front. For a helix or tragus, sitting down with a hand mirror helps.
  • Skip the pliers on the top. Metal tools scratch the finish and can catch the stones.
  • Still healing? If the piercing is fresh, let your piercer change the jewelry for you. Healing tissue does best when it isn't moved around.

How to Put Flat Back Earrings Back In

  1. Post first, from behind. Slide the post through your piercing from the back, so the flat disc rests against the back of your ear.
  2. Press the top in from the front. Line up the pin on the decorative top with the opening of the post, and press it in until the top sits flush against your ear.
  3. Feel for it to seat. You'll feel a clear stop when it's all the way in.

If the post is hard to find from behind — common on a helix or a second lobe piercing — an insertion tool helps. It's a thin guide pin you pass through the piercing first, so the post follows a path that's already open. Every TISTELLA pair comes with one. How the insertion tool works →

If the Top Starts to Feel Loose

Threadless tops hold by the bend in the pin, and you can reset that bend yourself. Take the top out, gently bend the last 1–2mm of the pin with your fingertips — near the tip only, never near the decorative top — and press it back into the post. The snug feeling comes right back. A worn thread can't be fixed that way, which is one reason threadless is easier to live with. Threadless vs threaded, compared →

Why Flat Backs Are Worth the Learning Curve

The first removal takes a minute. After that it takes seconds — and what you get in return is an earring with nothing behind your ear but a smooth 3mm disc. Nothing to poke into your pillow, catch on your hair, or press on the back of the piercing. Flat back vs butterfly back →

Every TISTELLA pair is threadless, made in ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium from the top to the pin, the post and the disc. The Air⁵ series sits on a 5mm post for thinner earlobes; everything else uses the 6mm standard. Every pair comes with an insertion tool, and two or more pairs take 12% off automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you take off flat back earrings yourself?

Yes. Hold the flat disc behind your ear and pull the top straight forward for threadless earrings, or unscrew it counterclockwise for threaded ones. No tools needed.

Why won't my flat back earring come off?

Usually it's one of three things: you're twisting a threadless top (pull it instead), you're pinching your earlobe rather than the disc, or your fingers can't grip a small smooth top. Try the ten-second check above, then use a tissue or rubber glove for grip.

Do you twist or pull flat back earrings?

Pull threadless tops straight out. Twist threaded tops counterclockwise. If a gentle twist doesn't move it, it's threadless.

Can I swap tops without taking the post out?

Yes, with threadless earrings. Hold the disc, pull the top out, and press a new top into the same post. Within one brand's range the pins and posts are made to match — every TISTELLA top fits every TISTELLA post, 5mm or 6mm.

How do I know if my flat back is in all the way?

The decorative top sits flush against the front of your ear and you felt a clear stop as you pressed it in. If there's a gap between the top and your ear, press a little further.
